Stasis Burn

Stasis burn is the colloquialism used when an individual leaves long term stasis and suffers some form of damage. The effects of stasis, especially millions of years of stasis, are still malleable, as science has not yet caught up with how each individual genome reacts to the stasis.

Stasis burn affects various collected parts of the human brain. These parts are not always portions of the brain as medical science might define them, but instead, they seem to be neural pathways that form connective processing centers for humanity. Those who study stasis burn call these pathways cortexes (singular: cortex). It is best to think of a cortex as a collection of discrete focused elements of the brain, that when working together achieve a goal.

Optional Character Creation Step: If your character awakens from stasis, you can use the below table to represent the effects of stasis burn.

1d6 Stasis Burn Effect
1 Emotional Cortex Burn: Check one despair at the start of the game.
2 Physical Cortex Burn: Every time you travel to a new system, you check one stress.
3 Perception Cortex Burn: If using the yes/no oracle for any narrative effect related to perception, you should apply a -1 to all rolls.
4 Informational Cortex Burn: When you scan a planet, if a result indicates you have found an insight, you must roll a d2 (flip a coin). On a 1, you do not actually find an insight. On a 2, proceed as normal.
5 Ongoing Cortex Burn: Every time you catch your breath, you must also check one stress.
6 Widespread Cortex Burn: Lower one attribute die by one size permanently (your maximum is one lower).

REMOVING STASIS BURN

When a character has a medkit, instead of using the medkit for other effects, they can remove a stasis burn effect from their character.
